The Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire Primary
The Iowa caucus was on February 1st, and this one in particular received a lot of attention due to businessman Donald Trump being a candidate at the Republican caucus. Trump has stirred up a lot of controversy recently with some comments he has made in the past and his stand on some issues. Despite this, he gathers quite a large crowd of supporters at his rallies. Ted Cruz, however, was the winner of the caucus, with Trump and Marco Rubio behind him. Rick Santorum and Rand Paul have dropped out of the race due to getting very few votes at the caucus. After losing to Cruz, Trump accused Cruz of voter fraud and suggested that he may sue him. Cruz’s campaign falsely hinted at Ben Carson dropping out of the race after Carson scheduled a trip to his home in Florida to take a break from campaigning for weeks on end. Cruz later apologized to Carson and said that it was a mistake on his part. Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina have officially dropped out of the race.
At the New Hampshire primary, Trump came in first with John Kasich following behind. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders faced off, with Sanders coming in at an extremely close second. These results have been reported as the closest in the history of the Iowa Democratic caucus. Many of Clinton’s supporters have been surprised at Sanders’ gaining popularity. Martin O’Malley did very poorly at the Iowa caucus, coming in at 0%. He announced that he was suspending his campaign soon after. Sanders had a big win at the New Hampshire primary with 60%, and Clinton had a total of 38% of the vote.
The caucuses and primaries will continue throughout the year. Some are more reported on than others, due to the population of the state and the majority political party in that state.
