Educate the Heart with the Arts

“Everything has beauty but not everyone can see it.” This quote by Confucius, used by Mrs. Layman, the art teacher here at Lincoln, set the mood for the Educate the Heart with the Arts event held in the LHS commons on Thursday, May 26th. The art students were able to share their art, music, and poems at this event, and in doing so, helped everyone become aware of the beauty in their pieces.

The night started out with an open, walk-in, showing of the advanced art students pieces while Mrs. Abercrombie’s students served drinks and desserts. Next students performed music and poetry pieces starting out with a lively performance by Mariah Iverson and Tieranny Hannes on the clarinet. Then, Caleb Richardson shared one of his poems revealing his gift for words as well as art. After, a German piece, sung by Anna Nordhagen, with Jenna Von Holtum accompanying on the piano, captivated the audience, and continuing after that, Josie Hahn read a moving poem that she wrote. To the stage next, was Caleb Richardson again, with some impromptu jokes during a short break. After, Leah Wittenberg performed a piece on the French Horn with Jenna Von Holtum again performing on the piano. When students were done performing, six of art students went up to a canvas and painted while listening to members of the orchestra, including Mr. Druse, play. It was fun to see how focused the art students were into creating whatever they felt like at the moment, some even got their fingers in the paint.

One thing all of these events had in common was the way they reached the audience. They were all raw and eye-opening and made people think. They truly helped people see the beauty in their pieces, and also showed their unique perspective that literally caused people to stop in their tracks and say the only word they could think of: wow
