Music, Sweet Music

With girls basketball going to state, soon after boys hockey did, we have a specific group to recognize. Our incredibly loyal LHS band goes with our teams for both section championship games as well as down to state. They were even praised by John Millea at MSHSL (Minnesota State High School League) as number one in the top 10 things about state hockey this year. With all these sports going on the band is incredibly busy, but they do have time to showcase some of their individual skills. On Monday the 7th, the LHS band, as well as the Morning Darkness Jazz Band from FMS (Directed by Mrs. Kristen Buckley), performed in the commons for a ‘Jazz Cafe’. Band showcases are of course a full experience, so if you stopped by you could enjoy an ice cream sundae, as well as a mocktail in addition to the music. The full band was featured as well as several small groups; such as the ever-popular pairing of Sam Buckley and Leah Wittenberg we get to see at Snofest and Homecoming. First up, we saw The Morning Darkness Jazz Band with soloists Shayla Halvorson, Jacob Leitch, Jerzie Finstad, and Maria Nordhagen. I would say we should wish them good luck on their jazz trip performances later this year, but I don’t think they need it. Senior, and general triple-threat musician Leah Wittenberg, played a solo on the french horn, accompanied by Mr. Froiland on the piano. Showing the vast talents of our band there was even a color guard performance by Megan Burrier. The two sub-groups featured were the trombone quartet: Peter Zaviska, Spencer Nelson, Dakota Berg, and Caleb Wessel, and the Drum line: Brit Aaker, Kaleb Flaagen, Tierney Hannes, Leah Wittenberg, Steve Batton, Dakota Berg, and Breiana Johnson. The full LHS band teamed up at the end for the final performance, the soloists Brock Borchardt, Travis Hawk, Spencer Nelson, and Jenna Von Holtum rounded out the night. It was a good way to celebrate the talent of our band, and how much they mean to us, from the solo performances to the paper flowers on the tables, made with the school song.
